Info for Evacuees with Pets
When evacuating, the Department of Agriculture recommends that people ask a friend or relative who lives some distance from the evacuation area if they and their pets can stay with them until the all clear is given.
An alternative is to find a pet friendly motel. There are a number of them listed on the web: www.pet-friendly-hotels.net/pet-friendly-hotels-newjersey.html, www.bringfido.com/lodging/state/new_jersey/, or www.funnewjersey.com/upload_user/Weekend_Getaways/HOTELS.HTM.
A helpful brochure on protecting pets in emergencies is available at: www.nj.gov/agriculture/divisions/ah/pdf/petbro.pdf

There are some pet friendly shelters available throughout the state. Pet owners need to contact their county OEM to locate the nearest shelter with pet capacity.
The following locations in NJ are accepting horses for sheltering. A horse owner must call ahead to ensure they are still accepting animals.
- Atlantic County Fairgrounds was accepting animals but they are at capacity
- Cumberland County Fairgrounds 609-685-4661
- Salem County Fairgrounds 609-364-8582
- Gloucester County Fairgrounds 856-498-1839
- The NJ Horse Park 609-915-5639
- Sussex County Fairgrounds 973-875-5057 or 973-222-0094
People coming to these locations with animals should bring at least three days of food and bedding and be prepared to be responsible for their own animals the entire length of the stay.
In addition, some counties have deployed their County Animal Response Team to shelter animals. Please check with your County Office of Emergency Management for further information. http://www.state.nj.us/njoem/about/association.html
